How to Sign Out of Gmail

It's important to log out of Gmail on some devices. While you might have no problems staying logged in to Gmail on your home computer or phone, it's probably best to log out of Gmail when you're done using it in other places like on a public computer or on someone else's phone.

Staying logged in to Gmail by accident can open a huge number of issues for you. Since many of us use our Gmail account to sign up for bank accounts, online shopping websites, and more, anyone who has access to the account can reset passwords and access those restricted areas, maybe even without your knowledge.

Fortunately, it's easy to make a habit out of logging out of Gmail. Even if you do forget, though, you can still log out of Gmail remotely or even stop a device from using your Gmail account should it get stolen or lost.

Desktop Website

 Signing Out of Gmail From a Computer.

When you need to log out of Gmail on a computer, you can do so in two simple steps.

1. Click or tap the image at the top right corner of Gmail. It's probably your own face unless you've changed it to something else.
2. Choose to Sign out when you see the menu.

If you're logged in to multiple Gmail accounts at once, you can sign out of those accounts, too.

To sign out of another account you're logged into, choose that account instead, to switch to it. Then, repeat the steps above to sign out.

Mobile Website

 Signing Out of Gmail From the Mobile Website.

If you're using Gmail through the mobile website, the steps for logging out are a tad different, but still really easy.

1. From Gmail.com, tap the hamburger menu button at the top left corner of the screen (the three horizontally stacked lines).
2. Tap your email address at the top of the screen.
3. On the bottom of the screen, tap Sign out.

You can also remove the Gmail accounts from the list of accounts that were just logged in. After signing off, use the Remove button to select the accounts you want to delete from the page.

Gmail Mobile App

 Logging Out of Gmail From the Mobile App.

Signing out of Gmail from the mobile app requires that you remove the account from your phone or tablet. Note that this doesn't delete your Gmail account, it just removes it from your phone until you log back in.

1. From the Gmail app, tap the hamburger menu on the top left.
2. Tap your email address at the top, and choose Manage accounts.
3. On the Accounts screen, tap EDIT.
4. Choose REMOVE next to any account, and then tap REMOVE again to confirm it and log out of that account.

If you want to keep using Gmail on the mobile app but not receive any emails, you can put that account into a suspended mode by disabling it from the Accounts screen.

How to Sign Out of Gmail Remotely

Logging out of Gmail remotely is a great idea if you've accidentally left yourself logged in on a public computer you no longer have access to, like in a library or school. The same screen for logging out of web sessions is also useful for seeing from where your account has been accessed recently, including the apps that have access to your Gmail.

1. Open Gmail on a computer and scroll to the very bottom of the page below all of your messages.
2. Click or tap the Details link on the bottom right. It's right next to a sentence that reads "Last account activity: <time>."
3. Choose the Sign out all other web sessions button.

Note these facts about signing out of your account from the last account activity page:

• You will not be signed out of the current session you're using to access this option.
• This does nothing to your Gmail password, so if another user has access to your account because they know your password or it's stored in their browser, and that's why you've logged them out, the only way to be sure that they don't get into your account again is to change your Gmail password.
• Email clients connecting through IMAP are not signed out. For example, if you're logged on through the Gmail mobile app as well, you will remain logged on.

Revoke Access to Your Google Account

There isn't a way to sign out of Gmail using the main account on an Android. However, from the Recently used devices area of your Google account, you can prevent the device from accessing your entire Google account, including your Gmail, which is useful if you lost the device or forgot to log out of a device you no longer have access to.

1. From a computer, sign in to your Gmail account.
2. Click or tap your Google profile picture near the top right corner of the page.
3. Click/touch My Account.
4. Find the Sign-in & Security section.
5. Choose the link called Device activity & security events from under the Sign-in & Security heading.
6. Go to REVIEW DEVICES in the Recently used devices area.
7. Click or touch the entry for the device you want to block from accessing your Gmail account.
8. Next, to the Account access line, choose the red REMOVE button.
9. Click REMOVE once more in the pop-up window to confirm.
